Buccaneer SAAC Helps Gather Over 250 Donations For Children's Cove Toy Drive

Over the past two weeks, the Massachusetts Maritime Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helped gather donations of over 250 new and unwrapped toys in support of the Academy’s annual toy drive to benefit Children’s Cove of Cape Cod.

Dozens of toys have been donated from across campus over that time span and were collected from under the Christmas tree at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center on Friday morning for distribution at Children’s Cove next week.

Children’s Cove is a freestanding, child-friendly facility designed to ensure that victims of child sexual abuse and their non-offending family members have access to support and services in a safe, respectful and compassionate environment.

The Buccaneer SAAC has been very active in the local community over the past two months, as student-athletes also helped collect boxed and canned goods as part of its Food Drive during the Cranberry Bowl football game with Bridgewater State at Clean Harbors Stadium on November 3rd.  Those items were donated to the Bourne Food Pantry prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone in the Massachusetts Maritime family who helped make this toy drive a huge success,” Buccaneer SAAC President and MASCAC SAAC Vice President 2/c Chris Gallagher says.  “In this special season of giving, our SAAC is honored to help bring joy to the lives of children and families in our local community.”

In the spring, the Buccaneer SAAC will be hosting a field day for Cape Cod Special Olympics as part of its on-going partnership with NCAA Division III.  The SAAC is also honored to conduct the annual Peter Ryan Memorial Triathlon on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 and will be involved in other activities during the spring semester.
