MMA Hall of Fame

The purpose of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Hall of Fame is to honor former athletes, Academy staff, alumni and individuals that have made a significant contribution to Academy athletics. Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the oldest continuously operating maritime academy in the nation, has maintained a reputation of excellence for over 115 years.

Student-athletes shall be eligible for consideration and induction into the Hall of Fame beginning no less than five years after graduation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Eligibility for former student-athletes for election to the Hall of Fame is based primarily on the athletic ability of the nominee as demonstrated by his / her performance. Consideration shall also be based on personal integrity, good character, academic achievement and high standards of sportsmanship.

College personnel presently or formerly employed at the Academy, as well as individuals who have made a significant contribution to Academy athletics shall be eligible.

A maximum of three new members who have graduated less than 30 years ago may be elected to the Hall of Fame in any given year.

A maximum of one new member who has graduated more than thirty years ago may be elected in any given year.

A maximum of one new member from college personnel, presently or formerly employed by the Academy, or individuals that have made a significant contribution to Academy athletics may be elected in any given year.

The Massachusetts Maritime Hall of Fame Committee proudly announces the 2008 Inductees:

Richard Covel ‘67

Rich Covel was captain of the 1966 MMA soccer team and a Colonial League All-Star as an undergraduate.

Rich Covel earned his J.D. degree from New England School of Law in 1975 and serves as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for Dynamics' Research Corporation of Andover.

His love of the game has kept him involved in soccer at many levels throughout his life.  He was a prime mover in the establishment of the Norwell Youth Soccer Program in 1983 and remained involved until 1991.  He has remained active as a player in the New England Over the Hill Soccer League, playing in approximately 750 matches and scoring over 200 goals in 48 years.

In 2006 he was appointed to the MMA Board of Trustees and has been a solid supporter of MMA Athletics and a strong proponent of athletics as an integral part of college life.  As a member of the Trustees Committee on Student Life he played a significant role in support of the Academy's new lighted artificial playing and practice fields.

Joseph Domingos

Joe Domingos began his association with the Academy in 1973 when he joined Don Ruggeri's football coaching staff on a part time basis while employed in the Falmouth school system.

In 1974 he came to MMA in the position of Company Officer in the Student Services Division as well as assistant football coach.

As star player at New Bedford High School and Bridgewater State College, Joe coached at New Bedford and Falmouth High prior to coming to the Academy.  He is a member of the New Bedford H.S. Hall of Fame and a former captain at Bridgewater State.

Working primarily with the offensive line, he served as defensive coordinator and worked with special teams over the course of his 27 years as an assistant.

He became head coach in 2001 and held that position until his retirement from football coaching in 2003.

Bill Johnson ‘85

Bill Johnson earned eight varsity letters from 1981 to 1985 in football and baseball.  He is the MMA all-time leader in career interceptions with 22, picking off seven passes per season in three consecutive seasons (1982-1984).  He is second all-time in punt returns with 43 and third all-time in return yardage with 347.  He captained the '84 Buccaneers.

Bill served as co-captain of the 1985 Buccaneer Baseball team.  MMA appeared in three ECAC New England Tournaments during his career, winning the title in 1982.  He hit .309 in his junior season as MMA earned a number 10 ranking in New England Division III college baseball.

Bill was a leader in the Regiment, holding the post of Regimental Executive Officer.  He was the recipient of the Howard C. Smith Award in 1985, being named the outstanding scholar-athlete in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference by a vote of the conference athletic directors.

David Webb ‘90

David Webb came to MMA from England in the fall of 1986 and made an immediate impact on the varsity soccer program.  He captained the team in 1989 and was voted to the All-Conference team in 1987 and 1988. 

He is the second-leading single-season scorer in MMA history with 30 points in 1988 and second all-time in career points. 

David was named team MVP in his junior and senior seasons, scoring 25 points as a junior on nine goals and seven assists and led the team in scoring in '87 and '88.

Ryan Woodland ‘99

Ryan Woodland is the all-time leading rusher in MMA history with 3,385 yards in his four-year career.  He holds the record for career rushing attempts (717) and all-purpose attempts (756) as well as the single-game mark for a freshman (191) and single-season record for a freshman (726).  His 95-yard run against Framingham State in 1998 is the second-longest run from scrimmage in MMA history.

Ryan was named to the NEFC all-Conference team in 1997 and 1998 and received the Hal Chalmers Award as the outstanding scholar-athlete in the Conference in 1998.

He was voted the Howard C. Smith Award winner in his senior season as the outstanding scholar-athlete in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference.
