Sophomore Nathan Sherr (Lynnfield, Mass.) rushed for 162 yards on 15 carries in his collegiate debut, including a 66-yard second quarter touchdown burst, as Massachusetts Maritime opened the 2009 season with a 31-14 non-league setback to New York Maritime in the Third Annual Chowder Bowl last Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium. Freshman quarterback Matthew Spinazzola (Melbourne, Fla.) completed 7-of-14 passes for 148 yards in his rookie debut for Head Coach Jeremy Cameron's Buccaneers, who also scored on a 25-yard fumble recovery and return by senior captain Howard Hayes (Westport, Conn.) in the fourth quarter. The Bucs outgained the Privateers by over 100 yards (429-325) in total offense and were paced defensively by senior Ryan Howley (New Fairfield, Conn.), who made 13 total tackles, including nine solo stops. Massachusetts Maritime returns to action on Saturday, September 12th when the Buccaneers entertain MIT in a non-league outing at Clean Harbors Stadium that begins at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Sophomore Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.) netted a pair of goals in his debut, while fellow sophomore Josh Hoy's (Camp Hill, Pa.) marker in the 59th minute of play proved to be the game-winner as Massachusetts Maritime opened the 2009 season with a 4-2 non-league victory over Mount Ida last Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium. Head Coach Greg Perry's Buccaneers scored three goals in an 11-plus minute span midway through the second half to overcome a 2-1 halftime deficit, as freshman Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) chipped in with two assists and sophomore Mark Mullaney (Bridgewater, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate triumph in goal with a four-save effort. Sophomore James Gendrolis (Weymouth, Mass.) netted the lone Bucs' marker on a Fischer feed in last Friday's tough 2-1 non-league setback to Coast Guard at Clean Harbors Stadium, as Mullaney made a career-high seven saves in the Massachusetts Maritime cage. The Bucs take that 1-1 mark on the road on Wednesday, September 9th for a non-league outing with Becker in Leicester, Mass. that begins at 6:30 p.m. EDT, and Perry's squad returns home on Saturday, September 12th to host Lesley in a non-league match at Clean Harbors Stadium that is set for 2:00 p.m. EDT. | ||

Freshman Rachel Johnson (East Chatham, Mass.) made 12 saves in her collegiate debut in goal for Massachusetts Maritime last Saturday afternoon, as Head Coach Christine McCarey's Buccaneers began their second season of varsity play with a 2-0 non-league setback to Newbury at Pine Manor Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. McCarey has tabbed senior Jess O'Meara (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Newell (Plymouth, Mass.) as the Bucs' co-captains for the 2009 campaign, and Massachusetts Maritime begins its home schedule on Wednesday, September 9th by entertaining Becker in a non-league match at Clean Harbors Stadium that begins at 3:30 p.m. EDT. | ||

Massachusetts Maritime opened the 2009 season over the weekend with three non-league matches at the Thomas Invitational in Waterville, Maine, as Head Coach Ashley Lorance's Buccaneers dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions to Maine-Presque Isle and Elms as well as a 3-1 setback to the host Terriers. Freshman Suzanne Marino (Kings Park, N.Y.) notched 16 kills, 13 digs and eight service aces for the Bucs, which also received 13 kills, seven digs and five service aces from sophomore Samantha Foley (Forestdale, Mass.). The freshman duo of Joanne Robery (Plainville, Mass.) and Leanne Talbot (Norton, Mass.) combined for 36 set assists for Massachusetts Maritime, which opens its home slate on Thursday, September 10th by hosting Suffolk in a non-league outing at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT. | ||
