BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomore Brad Musk (Dania, Fla.) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a sweep of a non-league college baseball doubleheader from Lyndon State by scores of 9-3 in the opener and 13-0 in the nightcap in games played Sunday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
Musk collected three of the host Buccaneers' (4-3) nine hits in the first game triumph while adding three RBI, as Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to a 6-0 cushion through the first four innings of play. Sophomore Andrew Saari (Framingham, Mass.) added a pair of hits and an RBI in the opener for the winners, who also received a pair of RBI off the bat of sophomore Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, Mass.). Junior Matthew O'Brien (Swampscott, Mass.) picked up the victory on the mound for the Buccaneers in the opener, allowing five hits and a pair of earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, while sophomore Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.) escaped a fifth-inning jam and struck out five over the final 2 2/3 frames to earn his first save of the spring. Freshman Stetson Hicks (Whitefield, N.H.) collected three hits, including a two-run single in a three-run fifth inning, in his collegiate debut for the visiting Hornets (0-2), as senior Matthew Picard (Winooski, Vt.) suffered the setback on the mound for Lyndon State in the opener, allowing just three earned runs and striking out four in five innings of work.
Sophomores Ross Hickey (Centerville, Mass.) and Michael Vargas (Natick, Mass.) each rapped out three hits and drove in three runs in the nightcap triumph for Massachusetts Maritime, which broke things open with an eight-run third inning and collected 17 hits for the contest. Freshmen Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and William Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) added two hits for the hosts in support of junior David Hike (Riverview, Fla.), who allowed just a lead-off single to Hornets' freshman Zach Maerder (Woodsville, N.H.) over five innings of work while striking out 10. Levitre and junior Tim Moore (Georgetown, Mass.) fanned a combined four over the final two innings to combine on the second Buccaneer one-hit shutout of the weekend, while senior Jesse Ballard (Alburgh, Vt.) went 2 2/3 innings in his first start of the season in taking the setback for the visitors.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Curry in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Lyndon State travels to Bethpage, N.Y. next Saturday morning for a non-league doubleheader with Briarcliffe that begins at 11:00 a.m.
