NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Senior quarterback Niles Pierson (Cheshire, Conn.) rushed for 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Coast Guard to a 30-6 New England Football Conference Bogan Division victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

Pierson's five-yard run late in the opening quarter of play was sandwiched by a pair of field goals from freshman Jacob Shackelford (Richardson, Tex.) of 37 and 24 yards, respectively, that staked the host Bears (2-2, 2-0 NEFC Bogan) to a 13-0 advantage at the break. Junior Steve Arguelles (Yuma, Ariz.) extended that margin to 20-0 midway though the third stanza on a 49-yard touchdown run, and Pierson plunged in from a yard out late in the frame for his second score of the afternoon. Shackelford's third field goal of the contest, a 34-yarder with 10:40 remaining, closed out the Coast Guard scoring on the afternoon, and freshman quarterback Kyle Moon (Wilmington, Mass.) hooked up with fellow freshman Kyle Rowe (Plymouth, Mass.) on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:47 to play to account for the lone score of the day for the visiting Buccaneers (0-5, 0-2 NEFC Bogan).

Arguelles added 121 yards on the ground for the Bears, as he and Pierson combined for 248 of Coast Guard's 365 rushing yards for the day. Pierson also completed 12-of-20 passes for 77 yards to finish with 204 yards of total offense, including nine hook-ups with sophomore Matt Tolliver (Richardson, Tex.) for 77 yards. Freshman quarterback Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.) rushed for 72 yards in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, while Moon completed all five of his passing attempts for 65 yards, three of which went to Rowe for 45 yards and the touchdown.

Senior Brian Yurovich (Marlboro, Mass.) paced the Bears defensively with 13 total tackles, including 10 solo stops and one sack, while sophomore Kyle Ennis (Mayo, Md.) made 11 tackles for the hosts, including eight solo. Freshman Richard Thomson (Yarmouthport, Mass.) led the Buccaneers defensively with 11 total tackles (eight solo) and a pair of pass break-ups in his first collegiate start, while junior Nick Stralka (North Kingstown, R.I.) was also in double figures with 10 total tackles (seven solo) on the day for the visitors. Coast Guard outgained Massachusetts Maritime by a 458-204 margin, and the Bears stopped the Buccaneers on three fourth down conversions, including two in the opening half of action.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Westfield State in an NEFC Bogan Division match-up next Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 12:30 p.m., while Coast Guard travels to Fitchburg, Mass. to take on Fitchburg State in an NEFC Bogan Division clash that kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
