CASTINE, Maine-- Junior fullback Jim Bower (South Paris, Maine) and sophomore quarterback Tyler Angell (Leeds, Maine) combined for 319 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lead Maine Maritime to a 26-7 New England Football Conference Bogan Division victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
The host Mariners (4-3, 3-1 NEFC Bogan) claimed "The Admiral's Cup" trophy for the fifth straight year, as Angell's 24 yard run 2:22 into the contest proved to be the lone score of the opening half and a 6-0 Maine Maritime advantage at the break. The visiting Buccaneers (0-7, 0-4 NEFC Bogan) took the opening kickoff after intermission and capped a six-play drive when freshman quarterback Kyle Moon (Wilmington, Mass.) hooked up with senior Colin Teehan (Plymouth, Mass.) for a 28-yard scoring strike and a 7-6 Massachusetts Maritime lead, but Angell gave the Mariners the lead for good midway through the third stanza with his second touchdown run of the day from 29 yards out. Bower tacked on two late scoring runs for the hosts, as his 13-yard touchdown with 5:40 to play extended Maine Maritime's edge to 20-7 before his plunge from nine yards out with 3:26 remaining closed out the scoring.
Bower (210 yards) and Angell (109 yards) accounted for all but 76 of the Mariners' offense on the day, as all 395 yards of Maine Maritime's total offense came on the ground. Moon completed 10-of-17 attempts for 105 yards and the touchdown to Teehan, who had three receptions for 44 yards, while junior Alex Butler (Bourne, Mass.) rushed for 27 of the Buccaneers' 62 yards on the ground, as he finished with 112 all-purpose yards.
Sophomore Wade Mondoux (Berwick, Calif.) paced Maine Maritime defensively with 10 total tackles and one of two Mariner interceptions on the afternoon, while sophomore Andy Hirko (Uxbridge, Mass.) led three players in double digits in tackles for Massachusetts Maritime with a career-high 15 total stops, including seven solo. Freshman Jack Gomes (Acushnet, Mass.) recorded a career-best 13 tackles for the Buccaneers, who also received 10 total tackles from senior Joe Loughry (New Freedom, Pa.).
Massachusetts Maritime, which still leads "The Admiral's Cup" series by a 21-15 margin, hosts Fitchburg State in a New England Football Conference Bogan Division match-up next Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Maine Maritime heads to Framingham, Mass. next Saturday to take on Framingham State in a NEFC Bogan Division clash that kicks off at Noon.
