BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Senior quarterback Dan Cohen (Wilbraham, Mass.) completed 16-of-22 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns to lead Westfield State to a 34-3 New England Football Conference Bogan Division victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.
Cohen connected with sophomore C.J. Franklin (Natick, Mass.) on an 84-yard scoring strike on the visiting Owls' (3-3, 1-2 NEFC Bogan) first play from scrimmage after sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) had staked the host Buccaneers (0-6, 0-3 NEFC Bogan) to an early 3-0 advantage with a 35-yard field goal, and junior Jason Proule's (Bridgewater, Mass.) one-yard plunge with just under four minutes remaining in the opening quarter gave Westfield State a 14-3 edge after 15 minutes of play. Cohen hooked up with senior Brett Ralph (East Longmeadow, Mass.) on a 15-yard touchdown pass midway through the second stanza, and freshman Kyle Anderson (Westminster, Mass.) extended the Owl advantage to 27-3 at the break with an interception return of 80 yards for a score, one of four picks on the day for the visitors defensively. Cohen connected with junior David Benoit (Ludlow, Mass.) with just over a minute to play in the third quarter for his third touchdown pass of the day to close out the scoring.
Westfield State amassed 351 yards of total offense on the afternoon, as junior Brandon Holt (Natick, Mass.) snagged seven receptions for 61 yards and four Owls combined to rush for 148 yards. Junior Alex Butler (Bourne, Mass.) rushed for 34 yards in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which gained 137 yards on the day, including a combined 61 yards through the air from freshman quarterbacks Kyle Moon (Wilmington, Mass.) and Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.). Senior Colin Teehan (Plymouth, Mass.) caught three passes for 34 yards as well for the hosts.
Senior Jay Fielding (Methuen, Mass.) paced Westfield State defensively with 10 total tackles on the afternoon, as Anderson, senior Matt Burzdak (Hampden, Mass.) and juniors Josh Mathieu (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Nick Leverone (Natick, Mass.) each recorded interceptions for the owls. Junior Nick Stralka (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Richard Thomson (Yarmouthport, Mass.) registered 10 total tackles each for Massachusetts Maritime, as Stralka added a sack and two tackles for losses of 12 yards.
