Four Buccaneers Honored For Work In Classroom With Spots On 2009 Pilgrim Lacrosse League All-Academic Team

Four members of the Massachusetts Maritime men's lacrosse team have been named to the 2009 Pilgrim Lacrosse League All-Academic team for their efforts in the classroom.

In order to earn All-Academic distinction, student-athletes from each league member institution must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and be a significant contributor to his team.

Seniors John Herman (Stamford, Conn./Westhill), Kevin Schultz (Crofton, Md./South River) and Michael Chretien (East Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), along with junior Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif./San Diegutio Academy), represent Head Coach Barry Joyce's Buccaneers on this year's squad.

Herman and Chretien, who are both Marine Transportation majors at the Academy, have posted cumulative GPA's of 3.26 and 3.35 respectively, while Schultz and Burke, who are both Marine Engineering majors, have notched GPA's of 3.45 and 3.55, respectively. Herman served as Massachusetts Maritime's co-captain this spring and notched 13 goals and five assists for 18 points, while Schultz collected 19 goals and 11 assists for 30 points. Chretien anchored the Buccaneers' defensive unit while appearing in 13 matches with six starts in 2009.

Burke, a two-time Pilgrim League All-Academic selection, earned second team all-conference honors on the field after leading Massachusetts Maritime with 42 goals and 15 assists for 57 points, registering eight hat tricks along the way.

Joyce guided the Buccaneers to their best campaign in seven years, as Massachusetts Maritime posted nine victories and advanced to the ECAC Division III New England semi-finals before falling to eventual tournament champion and 17th-ranked Endicott.
