THROGGS NECK, N.Y. -- Senior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) scored four goals, while sophomore Dan Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y.) tallied twice and added three assists for five points as SUNY-Maritime held off a fourth quarter rally to notch a 12-10 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Fourth Annual Maritime Cup played Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field.
A see-saw opening half of action saw the host Privateers (3-5) grab a 6-5 lead at the break, and SUNY-Maritime gained control of the contest in the third stanza with four unanswered tallies, including a pair off the stick of Messina, to take a 10-5 advantage into the final frame. The visiting Buccaneers (1-1) answered back with three straight goals, including a man-up marker from senior John Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) with 8:22 remaining, to close back to within a pair at 10-8, but a man-down goal by Ahern and a man-up tally by Messina in a 50 second span extended the hosts’ lead back to four with 6:13 to play. Massachusetts Maritime received markers from sophomore Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) and senior Jake Lennon (Bourne, Mass.) over the final 4:11 of action to account for the final score, as the Privateers held a man-advantage for the final 45 seconds of the match.
Freshman Tom Kelly (Hauppauge, N.Y.) added a hat trick and an assist in the triumph for SUNY-Maritime, which also received a goal and two assists from senior Cory Gallagher (West Islip, N.Y.). Junior James D’Amico (Floral Park, N.Y.) collected a marker and helper in the win for the Privateers, who also received an assist off the stick of senior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y.).
Sophomore Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) registered his second straight hat trick in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a pair of tallies and three assists from Prowse to go with a pair of markers and a helper off the stick of Hojnoski. Freshman Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) tallied twice for the Buccaneers, who also received single assists from senior Dan Langley (Abington, Mass.) and freshmen C.J. Hanson (Melrose, Mass.) and Anthony Kurylak (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth).
Senior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for SUNY-Maritime with a 14-save effort, while junior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made 15 stops in the Massachusetts Maritime cage as the Buccaneers outshot the Privateers by a 43-40 margin for the contest.
