FINAL: CLARK 16, MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 6
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore Ryan Moore (West Hartford, Conn.) and freshman John Goracy (Lumberton, N.J.) each netted five goals to lead Clark to a 16-6 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.
Moore notched a hat trick as part of a seven-goal outburst in the opening quarter for the host Cougars (7-5, 2-2 NEWMAC), and after the visiting Buccaneers (7-7, 1-4 NEWMAC) closed back to within 7-2 in the opening 3:48 of the second stanza, Goracy’s man-up marker extended Clark’s lead to 8-2 with 7:01 remaining in the half. Tallies by sophomore Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) in a 43 second span late in the quarter allowed Massachusetts Maritime to creep back to within four, but Moore’s fourth goal of the day with eight seconds to play in the half extended the hosts’ edge to 9-4 at the break. The visitors netted two of the first three markers after intermission, including a goal by freshman Eric Murphy (Danvers, Mass.) midway through the third stanza, to close back to four (10-6) once again, but Clark scored the final six goals of the contest, including three from Goracy, to account for the final margin.
Sophomore Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added two goals in the triumph for the Cougars, who also received a marker and four assists from freshman Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) as well as a tally and two helpers off the stick of junior Peter Christiansen (Seattle, Wash.). Sophomore Alex Turgeon (Holden, Mass.) netted a goal and an assist for Clark, which also received a marker from freshman Josh Rothwell (Swampscott, Mass.), two assists from freshman Darius Jagminas (East Greenwich, R.I.) and a helper off the stick of junior Keegan Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.). Sophomore Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a tally from freshman Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) and an assist from junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.).
Senior Kevin Ranta (Beverly, Mass.) picked up the win with 19 saves on the day in goal for Clark, while senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made eight stops in the opening 26-minutes of play to suffer the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received 11 stops in 33-plus minutes of action from freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.). The Cougars outshot the Buccaneers by a 50-35 margin and held a 16-10 edge in faceoffs.
Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until next Saturday, April 26th when the Buccaneers head to Cambridge, Mass. to take on MIT in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference outing that begins at 11:00 a.m., while Clark travels to Springfield, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on 13th-ranked Springfield in a NEWMAC match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
