FINAL: MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 11, EMERSON 3
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Ryan McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) netted a hat trick and a pair of assists for five points to lead Massachusetts Maritime to an 11-3 New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Emerson Sunday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The host Buccaneers (7-3, 1-1 NEWMAC) scored the first six goals of the contest, including a pair each off the sticks of junior Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.), in building a 7-1 advantage at the break, and after the visiting Lions (1-7, 0-1 NEWMAC) closed back to within four on a pair of third quarter tallies, McNeill iced Massachusetts Maritime’s triumph by collecting his hat trick in the final frame that enabled the hosts to reach the seven-win plateau for the second time in the last three seasons.
Sophomore Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.) added a pair of man-up markers in the victory over the Buccaneers, as Freudenberg notched two assists to finish with four points on the day for the winners. Landy and fellow freshman Kevin Collins (Hampden, Mass.) each netted three points for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a goal from freshman Patrick Kearney (Scituate, Mass.) and three assists from sophomore Sean Staples (Norwell, Mass.). Freshmen Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.) and Andrew Lawrence (Reading, Mass.) also chipped in with single helpers for the hosts.
Sophomore Nicholas Kitsos (Summit, N.J.) and freshmen Calvin Bussiere (Colchester, Conn.) and Greg Auerbach netted goals in the setback for Emerson, as freshman Keison Cunningham (Weymouth, Mass.) earned his first collegiate victory in net for Massachusetts Maritime with five saves over a 33-minute span in relief of senior Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.), who made a pair of stops in the first 24-plus minutes. Senior Zoe Fisk (Portland, Maine) made 12 saves in the setback for the Lions, as the Buccaneers outshot Emerson by a 40-22 margin while winning 14 of 17 faceoffs for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Emerson heads to Babson Park, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to take on Babson in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m.
