MMA Shines on a Cloudy day at Corsair Classic

The weather may have put a dampner on the event, but certainly not on the performances of the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers April 12 at the U-Mass Dartmouth Corsair Classic. The MMA men were in the process of dishing out a dominating performance when the weather conditions forced an early end to the event. When the rains came the MMA men stood in first place with 67.50 points.

The Bucs took first in three events. Brenton Murray was a double winner taking first in the javelin with a throw of 138-11, and in his first attempt at the hammer, he proved the lone qualifier and winner with a distance of 56-10. Rory O'Donnell won the triple jump (41-09.25).

Joe Page delivered a second place finish in the shot put at 37-05.75 feet. Anthony DeBalsi was fourth (127-02) in the javelin, followed closely by teammate Ray Berthiame in fifth at 121-02.

Peter Tomdio collected a third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-01.25 feet. Jason McWhirter was fifth in the steeplechase (11:54.10). Brian Reske and Brian O'Donnell delivered a pair of seventh place finishes, with Reske running the 1500 meter in 4:32.10 and O'Donnell going 31-06 in the shot put.

Once again it was Duxbury freshman Meredith Hall in first place in the javelin (103-02) as she helped the MMA women to a fifth-place finish. Danielle MacPhee was fourth in the long jump (13.2.25), Samelia Joe ran 14th in the 100-meter at 15.24 and was also a member of the women's 4x100 relay team along with Hall, MacPhee and Annie Scoran that placed sixth.
