History will take place this fall when Women's Soccer becomes the 17th intercollegiate varsity sport at Massachusetts Maritime, as Head Coach Christine McCarey looks to build a solid program in the always competitive Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference.
McCarey, a former standout at Springfield who also served on the staff at Bridgewater State prior to arriving in Buzzards Bay, welcomes 14 individuals to the inaugural edition of Bucs' women's soccer, including four seniors, one junior, three sophomores and six freshmen.
"I know everyone associated with this program is looking forward to the exciting challenges that lie ahead," McCarey, who also serves as Massachusetts Maritime's Head Softball Coach, says of the coming campaign. "To be a part of something special in its early stages is something that I know everyone at the Academy is very enthused about."
Senior Brigitte Calhoun (Micco, Fla./Sebastian River) and freshman Rebecca Luciani (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) will anchor the front line for McCarey this fall, while the midfield will be led by senior Heather Mallory (Harwich, Mass./Harwich), junior Jess O'Meara (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham), sophomores Ashley England (Hanover, Mass./Rockland) and Katie Maynard (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) along with freshmen Marissa Cap (Newburyport, Mass./Carrabassett Valley) and Kerri Conway (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield). Seniors Cali Longtin (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) and Colleen Welsh (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), sophomore Ashley Mercer (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English), along with freshmen Colleen Fissette (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) and Nicole Newell (Plymouth, Mass./Sacred Heart), comprise the Buccaneer backfield, while freshman Emily Welsh (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) will be the last line of defense in net this season.
The inaugural Massachusetts Maritime women's soccer campaign kicks off on Saturday, September 6th when the Buccaneers host Newbury in a non-league match at Commander Ellis Field beginning at Noon EDT.
