Buzzards Bay, Mass.-- The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome five new members this spring, as standouts in the sports of football, baseball, volleyball and softball, along with one of the nation’s legendary and iconic coaches, will be enshrined during ceremonies on campus on Saturday, May 21st.
Heading this year’s induction class is Bob Corradi, who retired last year after serving as Massachusetts Maritime’s Head Baseball Coach for 43 years and as the Academy’s longest tenured Director of Athletics after 26 years. A native of Bourne, Mass. and a current resident of East Sandwich, Mass., the man known simply as “Coach C” was a fixture on the Buccaneer baseball diamond from the days of the program’s NCAA Division III infancy in 1973 through its second Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championship campaign in 2015. Corradi became the 30th active coach in Division III play to earn his 500th career victory in April 2009, and he retired with 579 overall wins, eight post-season berths, a pair of MASCAC crowns as well as the 1982 ECAC New England championship. In all, Bob mentored four All-America and 19 All-New England honorees during his career while garnering MASCAC Coach of the Year accolades on four occasions, including during his final season a year ago.
In all, Corradi coached 81 total seasons at Massachusetts Maritime, as he served as a football assistant for 38 years for Don Ruggeri, Joe Domingos and Jeremy Cameron. From the time he arrived on Taylor’s Point until his retirement, he was part of over 800 victories on the gridiron and diamond and coached nearly 1,500 cadets. In September 1989, Bob succeeded Red Ryan as the Academy’s athletics director, and he doubled the number of varsity intercollegiate sports offered while overseeing the renovation and construction of all of the institution’s current athletics facilities, most recently Clean Harbors Stadium and the Clean Harbors Athletic Center. Just a week prior to his retirement, Corradi was honored as one of four Division III recipients of the 2014-15 Under Armour National Athletic Director of the Year award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), and three days later, he received an honorary doctorate from Massachusetts Maritime at the Academy’s Commencement ceremony.
Bob Delhome ’91 was a football standout and team tri-captain for fellow Hall of Famer Ruggeri during the late 80’s and early ‘90’s, as the Belmont, Mass. native shined on the defensive side while leading the Buccaneers to 16 victories over that time span. The CEO and founder of Charter Contracting Company of Boston, Delhome has remained a longtime supporter of the Academy’s athletics program since graduation, as his generosity has contributed greatly to the enhancement of resources for countless cadets over the past quarter century.
Ken Ramsey ’88 excelled in baseball under Corradi’s watchful eye in the mid 80’s, as the Lexington, Mass. native and current Billerica, Mass. resident earned third team Division III All-New England honors during his senior campaign after batting a team best .422 that included 10 extra base hits and 19 RBI. A two-sport standout who also played football at Massachusetts Maritime, Ramsey is a member of the Buccaneer .300 Club after sporting a career .363 batting average that includes a .327 mark during his sophomore season of 1986, as he was named as the Male Athlete of the Year in 1988 after copping team Most Valuable Player accolades earlier that spring.
Sean Crowe ’97 was one of the most versatile performers on the football field for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Pine Beach, N.J. native and current Belmar, N.J. resident played significant roles in all three phases of the game. A two-time all-New England Football Conference and all-ECAC New England honoree as a junior and senior in 1995 and 1996, Crowe recorded five career interceptions as a defensive back and averaged over 38 yards per attempt as the Buccaneers’ punter. Sean was also named to Football Gazette’s All-East team in 1996 and helped lead Ruggeri’s squad to 21 overall victories, including seven during the 1995 campaign.
The final member of this year’s induction class was a pioneer in women’s athletics during her career, as Ann Veillette Slagle ’86 shined on the volleyball court and the softball diamond for the Buccaneers. A native of Virginia Beach, Va. and a current resident of Billerica, Mass., Veillette Slagle earned the nod as Massachusetts Maritime’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1986 after serving as a team captain and top performer in both sports during the course of her career. She batted a team-leading .438 with 21 hits and 15 runs scored during her junior campaign of 1985, and over the program’s first three years of existence, she sported a career .403 batting average that included 52 hits in 42 games played. Ann also shined on the volleyball court under program founder Judy Cox, as she and the late Alison Rollins ’85 served as program mainstays while leading the Buccaneers in kills, attack percentage, service aces and digs.
The purpose of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Hall of Fame is to honor former athletes, Academy staff, alumni and individuals that have made a significant contribution to Academy athletics. Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the oldest continuously operating maritime academy in the nation, has maintained a reputation of excellence for 125 years. Student-athletes shall be eligible for consideration and induction into the Hall of Fame beginning no less than five years after graduation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
“It’s a privilege for all of us in the Massachusetts Maritime family to honor five of the greats in Buccaneer athletics, and I want to congratulate this year’s class on a well-deserved induction into our Athletic Hall of Fame,” Massachusetts Maritime Director of Athletics Garin Veris said of this year’s induction class. “The impact that these five individuals made during their matriculation and years of service to their communities is a reflection of the core values instilled at the Academy, and I couldn’t more pleased to welcome them back for what will be a truly memorable event.”
With the addition of the Class of 2016, the Massachusetts Maritime Athletic Hall of Fame will boast of 85 inductees after this year’s 17th annual ceremony.
