Third Annual Thunderbird Golf Classic Set For June 26 At Otis Falcon Golf Course
May 8, 2009

Buzzards Bay, Mass. -- A limited number of spots remain available for the Third Annual Thunderbird Golf Classic will take place on Friday, June 26th at Otis Falcon Golf Course at Air Station Cape Cod with a shotgun start set for Noon.

In its third year of supporting our military personnel, the Thunderbird Classic has evolved to support a scholarship to benefit cadets at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Daniel Joseph Foley '75 Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a dependent of an active duty member of the armed forces.

Daniel Joseph Foley passed away in May of 1974 and would have graduated with the Class of 1975. Dan studied Marine Engineering at Massachusetts Maritime and was an all-conference defenseman for the Buccaneer lacrosse team. His accomplishments on the field were recognized with an All-Conference Memorial Cup now located in the trophy case at Alumni Gym.

Dan Foley was one of 10 children. His three brothers are also MMA alumni: Mark William ‘70, Joseph Neal ‘81, and Douglas William ‘81. Their parents, Daniel Francis and Mary Ruth, volunteered at the Academy as library assistants during their retirement years, and also donated to the school the training ship model "Nantucket".

Today, Doug's daughter (and Dan's niece) Samantha is a cadet in the Class of 2012 and a member of the Buccaneer volleyball team. In marking the family connection with Massachusetts Maritime, Doug Foley had dedicated the proceeds from the third annual Thunderbird Classic Golf Tournament to a scholarship fund at the Academy.

While a limited number of spots remain in this year's Thunderbird Classic field, hole sponsorships are still available and donations are welcome in support of this worthy cause.
