Senior co-captain Tyler Spofford (Sharon Springs, N.Y.) rapped out four hits and drove in four runs, while sophomore Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) drove in three runs with a pair of hits as Massachusetts Maritime gained a split of a MASCAC doubleheader with Fitchburg State by notching an 8-4 opening game victory on Monday afternoon at Riccards Field in Fitchburg, Mass. Junior Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass.), sophomore Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.) each collected two hits in the triumph for Head Coach Bob Corradi's Buccaneers to back a complete-game effort on the mound by sophomore Nick Levitre (Grafton, Mass.), who scattered nine hits and struck out three to imrpove to 3-1 on the mound. Freshman Kyle Armstrong (Whitman, Mass.) added a two-run single in an 8-5 nightcap setback for the visitors, as Massachusetts Maritime enters the final week of the regular season just one game out of the final league playoff spot at 10-14 overall and 4-8 in MASCAC action. The Buccaneers begin a five-game homestand on Friday, April 24th by hosting Wentworth in a non-league outing at Commodore Hendy Field beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT. | ||

Junior Brian Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) netted six goals and three assists for nine points to back a season-high 19-save effort in goal from junior James Hitchings (Dover, Mass.) as Massachusetts Maritime notched a 17-10 Pilgrim Lacrosse League victory over Lasell last Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field. Junior Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif.) added a hat trick and an assist in the triumph for Head Coach Barry Joyce's Buccaneers, who also received two goals and two assists off the stick of senior Kevin Schultz (Crofton, Md.) as well as a pair of goals and an assist each from senior co-captain John Herman (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.). Sophomore Ryan Linn (Bourne, Mass.) added a goal and two assists for the winners, as Hitchings made 14 of his stops in the first half alone. Massachusetts Maritime, which stands at 5-6 overall and 1-4 in Pilgrim League play, closes out its regular season home slate on Tuesday, April 21st by hosting Clark in a Pilgrim League match at Commander Ellis Field that will be preceded by Senior Night ceremonies honoring the eight members of the Buccaneer Men's Lacrosse Class of 2009 beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT. | ||

The Massachusetts Maritime men's outdoor track & field team placed 12th overall in the final team standings at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational last Saturday afternoon in New London, Conn., as Co-Head Coaches Chris Barry and Cathy Lohse-Whitelaw's Buccaneers had several outstanding individual performances on the day. Freshman Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) continued his solid rookie campaign by finishing fourth in the high jump (1.83 meters) and ninth in the 110 meter hurdles (19.37) for the Bucs, while sophomore Ryan Buchanio (Plainville, Mass.) finished sixth in the discus (33.07 meters). Fellow sophomore Brian Reske (Duxbury, Mass.) added an 11th place individual finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:24.67, as he also teamed with junior Jason McWhirter (Melvin Village, N.H.), sophomore Matt Cyr (Newmarket, N.H.) and freshman Ian Wiltshire (Alexandria, N.H.) for a sixth place performance in the 4 X 800 relay in a time of 9.18.63. Both Massachusetts Maritime squads will compete for their respective Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference and New England Alliance Championships as the 2009 seasons come to a close on Saturday, April 24th with the annual events that will take place in Westfield, Mass. beginning at 11:00 a.m. EDT. | ||

The 2009 Massachusetts Maritime Academy Athletics Golf Invitational is set for Monday, July 27th at the Brookside Golf Club in Bourne, Mass. This year's event will benefit Buccaneer student-athletes in the sports of baseball, soccer and track & field.
