Keystone Bounces WNEU from New England Regional

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Keystone College used a four-run rally in the seventh to come-from-behind and eliminate Western New England University, 6-4, at a rainy Hendy Field. The Giants (34-14) advance to face Ramapo College tonight at 8 p.m., while the Golden Bears conclude an excellent season at 32-15.

Western New England struck first after Keystone starter Nathan Hinkley struggled with his command to open the game, walking the first batter and plunking the next two. Joe Cassella roped a run-scoring single to score the first run of the game and a second came around on a sacrifice fly by Ben LaCroix. The final run of frame came as the Golden Bears attempted a delayed double steal, with Cassella sacrificing himself to allow Erik Lacaire to score.

The Giants answered back in the second after Eric Drzewiecki singled and scored on a Jandi Peña. Peña advanced to third on the play thanks to a throwing error, scampering home on a wild pitch.

Jake Kawiecki gave the Golden Bears six solid innings, working around baserunners in the third and fourth before striking out the side in the fifth.

Meanwhile, WNEU added a fourth run in the top of the fifth as Jamie Schofield drew his second free pass of the contest and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hinkley induced a flyout before walking another man, and Cassella once more drove in the run with a safety.

Kawiecki departed after 112 pitches and Keystone immediately set to work on the Western New England bullpen. Mohammed Hussein stroked a one-base hit and advanced to second on a walk to Chris Panzarella. Dakota McFadden, who tossed a gem yesterday, singled home Husseen, and Ronald Medina took a free pass to knock Patrick Westerlind out of the game.

Conor Scully entered and immediately hit Adam Kelly to drive in a run before Drzewiecki plated two with a two-RBI base-knock. Jeff Zebrowski then came into the game and got a crucial strikeout, but Keystone took a 6-4 lead it would not relinquish.

Hinkley tossed the final two innings himself and finished off the game without a single clean frame, but earned the win (7-1) by scattering eight hits and three walks. The righty struck out nine.

Both teams had three players with a brace of hits, with the Golden Bears featuring Cassella, Alex Loparco, and Aaron Ríos. Hussein, McFadden, and Drzwiecki rapping a pair for Keystone.

The New England Regional is now down to four teams, with the winner of Keystone and Ramapo earning a bid to the semifinals. Also surviving are undefeated Oswego State and UMass Boston, which battle at 4:30 p.m. on the campus of Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
