Sailing Finishes 3rd in Harman Trophy; Seventh in Penobscot
CASTINE, ME -- The Buccaneers sailing team opened their 2024-2025 season this past weekend competing in the Penobscot Bay Open and the Harman Trophy.
In the Harman Trhopy, the Bucs off-shore team took on seven other boats from around New England. In harsh conditions with 27 knot winds and sea swells of four feet, the Buccaneers bested five other boats finishing third overall with 29 points. Tuft won the Trophy with 19 total points and Bowdoin was second with 21 points. The Buccaneers 29 points was eight points better than Boston University and URI who finished with 27 points. Maritime finished top five in each of the eight races on the weekend with a second place finish in the final race that propelled them in to their third place finish. The posted three third place finishes and two fourth and fifth place finishes in the Harman and came home with the most amount of NEISA points they wil learn in any even throughout the fall season.
In the Penobscot Bay Open dinghy event, the Buccaneers totaled 203 points over the weekend beating out Bates College by six points and hosts Maine Maritime's B boat by 42 points. The University of Vermont on the Open with 113 points and Northeastern and Maine Maritime's A boat rounded out the top three in the regatta.
The Buccaneers will be back on the water next weekend with events at Bowdoing College and Navy.
