FINAL: MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 7, WHEELOCK 0
BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior Aoife Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.), junior Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) and sophomore Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals as Massachusetts Maritime continued the best start in program history with a 7-0 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Wheelock Tuesday evening at Winsor Field.
Freshman Emma McNally (Mashpee, Mass.) gave the visiting Buccaneers (4-1), who have already matched the school single-season record for wins in just five matches to date, the only goal they would need just 1:35 into the contest, while Callinan and Hunt each netted a pair of tallies over the final 29 minutes of the opening half to stake Massachusetts Maritime to a 5-0 advantage at the break. Taylor, the reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, added markers in the 54th and 78th minutes to account for the final margin and give the visitors their longest win streak in the program’s nine-year varsity history.
Freshman Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) earned her fourth triumph and second shutout of the season with a five-save effort in goal for the Buccaneers, while sophomore Dominique DelBene (Peabody, Mass.) made seven stops in the setback for the host Wildcats (0-5). Massachusetts Maritime outshot Wheelock by a 20-10 margin overall (14-5 on goal), as each team had four corner kicks on the evening.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Worcester State in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Wheelock entertains Pine Manor in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Winsor Field that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
