Teehan Signs with Harwich Mariners of Cape League

HARWICH, Mass – Monday evening, it was announced that Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneer baseball rising junior starting pitcher John Teehan (Boston, Mass) would be signing a contract with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Tuesday morning, Teehan signed the contract and was activated by Harwich general manager, Ben Layton.

The Cape Cod Baseball League is the premier summer collegiate baseball league in the United States filled with amateur collegiate baseball players from around the country with hopes and aspirations of one day being drafted by a Major League Baseball League team. This June, 60 CCBL alumni were drafted in the first four rounds of the 2019 MLB Draft, 14 of which were drafted in the first round.

The Team that Teehan has signed with, the Harwich Mariners, were founded in 1930 and have won Cape League Championships as recently as 2008 and 2011. Some alumni that played for the Mariners are current San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt, former Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, former Red Sox pitcher Craig Hansen, Former Red Sox first baseman, Northeastern University standout and Haverhill, Mass native Carlos Pena and many others. The current Harwich roster features players from the University of Florida, Wake Forest, LSU, Virginia, Tennessee and now, Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

"Signing with Harwich is great for John. It shows that his hard work is being noticed at Maritime and in the Park League in Boston." Said head coach Mike Kelley. "An experience like this can only help John's growth as a pitcher in our program." Added Kelley.

In 2019, Teehan made 12 appearances for head coach Mike Kelley and the Buccaneers. He started nine games and posted a 3-4 record on the bump. In 52.2 innings John struck out 60 hitters and posted a 4.27 ERA while throwing four complete games. In his career, the soon to be junior, has a 7-7 record, 3 saves and 123 strikeouts in 109.0 innings pitched. Prior to signing with the Mariners, Teehan was playing for the Parks League, a summer league in the Boston area.

"I'm excited for this opportunity with the Mariners organization and look forward to sharing a dugout with some of the best division one players from around the country." Said Teehan. "The team was looking for pitching staff depth and I am grateful that they contacted me to help them with that. I want to thank my coach, Mike Kelley, Harwich manager Steve Englert and General Manager Ben Layton for facilitating this opportunity."

Teehan will join the Mariners on Tuesday and will wear #11 for the club. There is a chance that Teehan could pitch for Harwich on Tuesday night against Brewster if they win game one of their doubleheader against Orleans.

There are only a few days left in the regular season for the Cape League before the 2019 playoffs begin. For more information on John Teehan, visit For more information on the Harwich Mariners visit their website at
