Buccaneers Shutout in Home Opener by Rams

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneer women's soccer team (0-2) played their home opener Monday night at Clean Harbors Stadium against the Suffolk University Rams. Coming off of a 3-2 loss to SUNY Maritime on Saturday, the team fell to the Suffolk University Rams (2-1) 10-0.

The Buccaneers took four shots in the game, all on target. Senior Jessica Baldassini (Middleborough, Mass) took two shots from the right wing, freshman Jackie Damery (Plympton, Mass) and Aviva Beringhause (Providence, R.I.) accounted for the other two Maritime shots. Goalkeeper Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) faced 24 Suffolk shots in the game. She made 14 saves and allowed the 10 Ram goals.

Suffolk junior, Caleigh O'Brien (Wilbraham, Mass) led all scorers with four goals in the game on 12 total shots, seven on target. She also assisted on another goal. Junior Liv Hurley (Newburyport, Mass) scored a hat trick on six shots on target, including the first goal of the night for the visitors. Addisyn Lanza (Madison, Conn), Julia Hunt (Dedham, Mass) and Jackie Kelly (Woodbridge, N.J.) each scored a goal in the game. Hunt added two assists to her score line. Carley Pearce (Bridgewater, Mass) also tallied two assists in the match while junior Leto Katsoufis (Reading, Mass) also assisted on a Ram goal. Goalkeeper Allison Rodrigues (North Andover, Mass) saved all four shots she faced on the night.

The Rams attacked early, scoring a goal 27 seconds in to the game off the foot of Hurley, which proved to be the game winner. In the 17th minute, O'Brien scored her first. Before the first half ended, Lanza found the back of the net and Lanza scored twice. The Rams led 5-0 at the end of the first 45.

In the second half, the Rams scored another five, the first coming in the 49th minute from O'Brien. O'Brien went on to score two more time in the game, including the final two goals of the night in the 82nd and 86th minutes. Hunt and Kelly each added a goal for the Rams in the second half. Beringhause had the best opportunity of the night for the Bucs when she received a pass from Baldassini in front of the Suffolk goal but she couldn't get enough on the ball to get it by Rodrigues. The game finished 10-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Buccaneers are back on the pitch on Friday night when they travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier University at 6pm.
