Bucs Win on Senior Night over Warriors

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Men's Lacrosse hosted Eastern Connecticut in Conference play on Tuesday night at Clean Harbors Stadium. It was also senior night for the Buccaneers' seven seniors. Needing a win to possibly lock up the #2 seed in the Little East conference playoffs next week, the Bucs did just that, dominating the Warriors, 19-8.

  • Warren Channing and Landon Mabb scored three goals apiece in the loss. Cooper Piesco and Seamus Donoghue added one goal each. 
  • Mabb recorded the only two assists in the game for the Warriors.
  • Faceoff man, Gavin DeLucia won six of 17 faceoffs he took and picked up a team-high six ground balls. 
  • Defensively, Travis Willcox caused a game-high five turnovers. 
  • In total, Eastern Conn picked up 30 ground balls, was successful on 24 of 31 clearances, won eight of 30 faceoffs, and took 33 shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Warriors scored first on Channing's first of the game at 11:53. Vricella tied the game for the Bucs at 7:55, and Kane gave the hosts the lead at 6:50, 2-1. Eastern scored two goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter and led, 3-2, at the end of the first.

In the second, Maritime scored three goals in 1:10, with goals from Cabot, Vricella, and Sullivan to go up by two, 5-3. The Warriors scored at 11:45 on a Channing goal to cut the Bucs' lead back to one goal. Then, the teams traded goals again with Kane and Mabb scoring. at 10:01 left in the half, the Bucs held a 6-5 advantage. Following Mabbs' goal, the Bucs scored on Mucha and Kane before the end of the quarter, and Maritime led at the half, 8-5.

To start the third, the Bucs scored two goals in 16 seconds with Kane scoring at 12:51, and Barrett netting a goal at 12:35. The Bucs' lead was now five goals, 10-5. Eastern went on to score two goals in the quarter, both from the stick of Mabb, and the Bucs got three more goals, two from Mucha and one from Vricella. At the end of three, Maritime led, 13-7.

It was all Buccaneers in the fourth quarter as they got six straight, eight going back to the third, from Shanahan, Vricella, Kelleher, Mucha, Bengtson, and Gambill to run the score to 19-7. Piesco scored the final goal of the game at 2:54, and the Buccaneers went on to win the LEC contest by a final score of 19-8.

The Bucs close out the regular season on Friday, April 24th, at Southern Maine in conference play with the faceoff at 4 pm.
