Bucs Drop First Conference Game to Beacons

BOSTON, Mass -- The Buccaneers men's lacrosse team faced off against UMass Boston on the road Saturday, and despite a close first half, the Beacons pulled away in the second half to hand the Bucs their first conference loss of the season.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Quinn Mucha and Daniel Kane led the Bucs with two goals. Cooper BarrettJames Sullivan, and Braeden Kosiwicz scored one.
  • Sullivan notched two assists in the loss. Mucha, Barrett, and Cooper McIntire had one assist.
  • Cole Jenkins and Kosiewicz led the team with five ground balls apiece.
  • On the faceoff, Jenkins won 12-of-22 he took.
  • Defensively, four Buccaneers had a caused turnover.
  • In total, Maritime picked up 30 ground balls, were successful on 23-of-27 clearances, won 14-of-26 faceoffs, and took 36 shots in the game.

UMass Boston

  • Jack Schartner scored a game-high seven goals in the win. Matt Hutchings scored three times, Timothy Sullivan and Dale Wills scored twice, and Shane McGonagle and Sean Daly scored one.
  • Hutchings and Seth Libby had two assists. Seven other Beacons recorded one assist.
  • Nick Gualtieri picked up seven ground balls to lead all players.
  • Jack Baker won 10-of-18 faceoffs in the game.
  • Defensively, Holden Kuzniar and Gualtieri caused three turnovers.
  • In total, UMass Boston picked up 43 ground balls, converted 22-of-23 clearances, won 12-of-26 faceoffs, and took 54 shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Beacons scored first at the 11:37 mark of the first quarter, and the Bucs matched that with a Sullivan goal at 11:17. From the nine-minute mark to 5:12 left in the first, UMB scored four times to take a 5-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Kane scored for the Buccaneers and brought the score to 5-2.

There were bo goals scored in the second quarter by either team and the Beacons too ka three-goal, 5-2 lead to the half. 

In the third, the Beacons scored first less than two minutes in to go up 6-2. Kane scored again for the Bucs at 10:44 on a power play to pull back within three goals, 6-3. With the game relatively close, with six minutes left in the third, the floodgates opened for UMass Boston as they proceeded to score six goals in just over three minutes and led 12-3 at the end of the third.

The Beacons made the score 13-3 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, and though the Bucaneers scored four times i the fourth, it wasn't enough to get them back in the game as the Beacons went on to win the game, 16-7.

The Buccaneers continue their LEC slate on Tuesday, April 8th in Connecticut against Eastern Connecticut at 6pm.
