Buc Ball Seeps Terriers on Taylor's Point

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers played host to Thomas College on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader. Though the Terriers kept both games close, the Bucs offense was too much to overcome with Maritime taking both games, 12-5 and 11-8.

 

Game One

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • AJ Pietrafesa and Colsen Loughren went 3-for-4 in the game. Brett Velzis had two hits and Aaron ColeEvan Vieira, and Michael Estrada all added a hit.
  • Loughren drove in three runs to lead the Buccaneers. Estrada had two RBI and Pietrafesa and Velzis both had one.
  • Vieira scored three times in the game. Pietrafesa, Loughren, and Estrada all scored twice. Cole, Velzis, and Alec Marsden scored once.
  • Estrada hit his team-leading third home run of the season in the game. Loughren added a double to round out the extra-base hits for the Bucs.
  • Pietrafesa, Velzid, Estrada, Marsden, and Damon White all had stolen bases in the win.

Thomas

  • DJ Cagnina and Matt Seymour had two-hit games for the Terriers. Tony Meza, Gavin Clark, and Bryce Bardwell each had one hit.
  • Cagnina and Bardwell drove in two runs. Clark added an RBI.
  • Five different Terriers scored in the game.
  • Clark and Bardwell had home runs in the loss. Cagnina and Seymour had doubles.
  • Hayden Dippner and Elijah Morton each stole a base. 

 

How It Happened

Thomas scored the first run of the game in game one in the top of the first. Cagnina singled to score Dippner and the Terriers took an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, the Buccaneers erased the deficit and took a lead of their own. Velzis singled into center field to bring in Cole tying the game. During the next at-bat, the Bucs executed a double steal with Velzis getting to second and Vieira scoring from third to give Maritime a 2-1 lead after one inning.

The Terriers retook the lead in the top of the second on a two-run blast by Bardwell giving Thomas a 3-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, the Bucs took the lead back and opened a gap, plating five runs in the inning. Vieira scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two-RBI single from Loughren bringing in Velzis and Pietrafesa. Estrada then hit his third home run of the season bringing in himself and Loughren to make it a 7-3 game in favor of Maritime.

Clark homered for the Terriers in the top of the fourth to make it a three-run game, 7-4. In the bottom of the fourth frame, the Bucs struck again, this time for four runs. Loughren knocked in another run with a single to center field. Marsden reached on a fielder's choice and thanks to a miscue by Thomas Loughren came in to score. Estrada later scored on another Terrier wild pitch and Marsden scored after that on another well-executed double steal by the Bucs. Maritime led, 11-4, after four.

Thomas scratched one more run across in the fifth to get to five runs. The Bucs scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Pietrafesa and the Buccaneers went on to win game one, 12-5.

Thomas

  • Cam Haynes and Aaron Young each had two hits for the Terriers. Five other Thomas hitters had one hit.
  • Matt Seymour drove in four runs in the loss. Haynes and Young drove in two. 
  • Haynes had the only home run of the game and Rivero-Caraballo had a double.
  • Haynes and Javier Diaz scored twice in the game. Four other Terriers scored once.

 

How It Happened

The first inning was scoreless in game two and then in the second inning, the Bucs put five runs on the board. Weir hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Estrada and on a miscue by the Terriers, Logiudice scored as well to make it 2-0. With the bases loaded, Velzis doubled to center and brought in Pietrafesa, Cole, and Freeman to give the Buccaneers a 5-0 lead after two innings.

In the third, Thomas cut the deficit to one run with four runs in the inning. Haynes hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Seymour reached on an error with the bases loaded and all three runs came in to score. In the bottom of the inning, the Buccaneers score three mores. One on a Cole single to left field and two more on a Velzis single. Maritime led 8-4 after three.

Thomas got close again in the fifth with four runs. The first came on a bases-loaded walk, two more came in on a Young single to right center. The Bucs held an 8-7 lead after five.

In the top of the sixth, Haynes hit a solo home run to tie the game at 8-8. The Bucs then scored three in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. Loughren scored on a Logiudice single, Cole singled in Logiudice, and Weir came in to score on a Terrier error.

Maritime took game two and the sweep of Thomas with an 11-8 win in the second game.

The Buccaneers are at Dean College on Tuesday, March 25th for a 3:30 pm first pitch.
