Bucs Shut Out Bears to Reach MASCAC Championship

BRIDGEWATER, Mass -- Following their walk-off win over Framingham State in the Buccaneers first game in the MASCAC baseball playoffs, Maritime took on Bridgewater State in the winners bracket on Friday morning in Bridgewater. A masterful performance on the mound from Sam Huffman and a 10-run explosion on offense, the Bucs shut out the Bears, 10-0, to advance to the Championship of the MASCAC on Saturday.

How It Happened

Maritime opened the scoring in the top of the first inning before the Bears could get to the bat rack. Velzis doubled in Pietrafesa to take a one-run lead, and Loughren drove in Velzis to give the Buccaneers a 2-0 lead after one.

In the third, Loughten struck again with a two-RBI double, bringing in Cole and Velzis. The Bucs extended their lead to 4-0 through three. 

Cole singled in Logiudice in the fourth to bring the score to 5-0 after four. 

The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless between the teams as Huffman continued to dominate, striking out 11 through his six innings of work.

In the top of the seventh, Maritime scored five insurance runs. White walked with the bases loaded, Pietrafesa knocked in two with a third run scoring on a Bridgewater error, and Velzis hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another. Maritime led, 10-0, through seven.

Iannone shut down the hosts through the final three innings, and the Buccaneers advanced to the MASCAC Championship round with a 10-0 win over the Bears.

 

What's Next

The Bucs await the winner of #5 Salem State and #1 Bridgewater State on Saturday at noon. The Championship round begins at 3pm in Bridgewater.
