Fograshy, Erlwein Named As Massachusetts Maritime Alumni Athletes Of The Year As Part Of 2010 Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet Festivities

Buzzards Bay, Mass. --  Women’s Cross Country standout Lauren Fograshy and football all-conference performer Jim Erlwein were named as the 2009-10 Massachusetts Maritime Alumni Athletes of the Year earlier this week as the Buccaneer Class of 2010 was honored at the Department of Athletics’ Senior Student-Athlete Awards Banquet on campus.

Fograshy, a native of Monson, Mass. and a graduate of Monson High School, posted eight top 10 finishes for Head Coach Linda Letourneau’s squad over the past three seasons while earning all-MASCAC accolades along the way, as she finished 24th individually at last fall’s conference championships, while Erlwein, a native of Livingston Manor, N.Y. and a graduate of Sullivan West High School, earned all-New England Football Conference honors while playing three different positions on defense for Head Coach Jeremy Cameron’s Buccaneers over the course of his career.

Men’s Lacrosse standouts Brian and Connor Burke (Del Mar, Calif./San Diegutio Academy) were named as co-recipients of the Academic Dean’s Award, which honors senior student-athletes who have persevered in athletics as well as in academics, combining outstanding academic achievement with athletic accomplishments.  The twin brothers combined for seven all-conference honors both on the field and in the classroom during the course of their careers for Head Coach Barry Joyce’s squad and rank in the top 10 in both career goals and points.

Women’s Cross Country tri-captain Kaitlin O’Donnell (Damascus, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) received the Foundation Award, which is presented to a female student-athlete who best exemplifies the true spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics, as the four-year letterwinner has earned several academic accolades while serving as a member of the NCAA Division III National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  Football standout William Hafferty (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) was the recipient of the Trustees Award, which is presented to a male senior student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit and philosophy of Division III athletics, as the three-year starter served as a Student Trustee during his junior campaign and earned a spot on the 2009 College Sports Information Directors of America ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad last fall for his work in the classroom.

ECAC Merit Medals, which recognize senior student-athletes who are members of a varsity team governed by ECAC and NCAA rules of eligibility and are bestowed on athletes who have combined athletic achievement with service to the institution, were presented to men’s crew standout Christopher Duarte (Seekonk, Mass./Tri-Country), rifle tri-captain Junita Goldman (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) and two-sport athlete Jess O’Meara (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham), who served as captain for both the women’s soccer and softball squads.  Additionally, O’Donnell and O’Meara were presented with Senior Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Awards to recognize members of the senior class who have provided valuable contributions and service to the Buccaneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during their matriculation at the Academy.

Athletic Director’s Academic Achievement Awards were presented to 12 members of the senior class for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom during their career, as the honor is awarded to student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in their chosen major.  Those student-athletes honored were Marine Engineering majors Brian and Connor Burke, Duarte, Goldman, Hafferty, O’Donnell, baseball captain Joe Albano (Agawam, Mass./Loomis Chaffee), men’s soccer co-captain Chris Corr (Haverhill, Mass./Whittier Tech), women’s sailing standout Kathryn Maynard (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and football defensive starter Matt Wiszowaty (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) as well as Emergency Management majors Mike Dangoia (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham), also a defensive starter on the football squad, and baseball captain Tim Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown).

Massachusetts Maritime Registrar Mike Cuff was the recipient of the ECAC Appreciation Award, which recognizes institutional staff members, past and present, for their efforts in advancing the services and programs of the ECAC and their member institutions.  Additionally, a total of 29 members of the Academy’s Class of 2010 were honored by Buccaneer Director of Athletics Bob Corradi and their respective head coaches with their senior class gifts.
