Buccaneer Women's Lacrosse Club Team To Host Salem State In Inaugural Home Match Friday Evening

The Massachusetts Maritime women’s club lacrosse team will play its inaugural home match tomorrow evening against Salem State University’s club team at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Buccaneers are led by Head Coach Julie Rigo, who came to the Academy last summer after a highly successful stint as the Head Girls’ Lacrosse Coach at Bourne High School.  Rigo was a standout locally at Sandwich High School before matriculating at Stonehill College, where she was a member of the Chieftains’ NCAA Division II national runner-up squad in 2002.

Tomorrow match will be the second meeting of the spring between the Buccaneers and Vikings, as Head Coach Tara Kelly’s Salem State crew bested Massachusetts Maritime in the first contest back on April 8th at Alumni Field in Salem, Mass.

Women’s Lacrosse will officially become a varsity athletic program at the Academy on July 1st, as Massachusetts Maritime will compete as a member of the New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance for the 2012 spring season.  Current NEWLA institutions include Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Westfield State, Worcester State, Becker and Elms, and both Massachusetts Maritime and Salem State will join the league this July.
