Massachusetts Maritime took the opening kickoff and jumped out to an early advantage thanks to a 35-yard field goal off the foot of sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.), but Head Coach Jeremy Cameron's Buccaneers dropped a 34-3 New England Football Conference Bogan Division decision to Westfield State last Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.  Freshmen quarterbacks Kyle Moon (Wilmington, Mass.) and Nick Montalto (South Yarmouth, Mass.) combined for 61 passing yards for the Bucs, who received 10 tackles each from junior Nick Stralka (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Richard Thomson (Yarmouthport, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime hits the road on Saturday, October 18th when the Bucs venture to Castine, Maine to renew their longstanding rivalry with Maine Maritime in the 36th edition of "The Admiral's Cup" at Ritchie Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Men's Soccer
 
Tim Meighan 

Senior co-captain Tim Meighan (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made nine saves over 78 minutes of action for Massachusetts Maritime last Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 MASCAC setback to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at Shewcraft Field in North Adams, Mass.  Freshman Corey Cameron (Westfield, Mass.) made one stop in net for Head Coach Greg Perry's Buccaneers, who have a busy three-match week on tap that begins on Tuesday, October 14th with a trip to Quincy, Mass. to take on Eastern Nazarene in a non-league outing that begins at 3:00 p.m. EDT.  The Bucs return home on Thursday, October 16th to host UMass Dartmouth at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 6:00 p.m. EDT.

Senior Brigitte Calhoun's (Micco, Fla.) goal 3:50 into the second overtime lifted Massachusetts Maritime to the second victory of its inaugural campaign last Tuesday evening with a 3-2 non-league triumph over Wheelock at Commander Ellis Field.  Freshman Rebecca Luciani (Wakefield, Mass.) netted the tying goal for Head Coach Christine McCarey's Buccaneers before setting up Calhoun's marker in the second extra session, while fellow freshman Kerri Conway (West Springfield, Mass.) also notched a goal and an assist for the winners.  Freshman Emily Welsh (Shelton, Conn.) made 11 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Bucs, who return to action on Saturday, October 18th with a MASCAC road clash in Fitchburg, Mass. against Fitchburg State that begins at 6:00 p.m. EDT.

The Buccaneers played five matches last week as Massachusetts Maritime's first varsity campaign in two years continued with contests at Westfield State, Framingham State and the Maine Farmington Quad.  Sophomore Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, Mass.) notched 11 kills, five digs and three service aces on the week for Head Coach Ashley Lorance's Bucs, while fellow sophomore Allison Condino (Fitchburg, Mass.) registered 19 set assists, including a career-high seven against Maine-Farmington.  Massachusetts Maritime returns to action on Saturday, October 18th when the Bucs head to New London, Conn. for a non-league tri-match with host Mitchell and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts that begins at Noon EDT.

Men's & Women's Cross Country
  
Kyle Ingersoll

Senior Kyle Ingersoll (Wakefield, Mass.) was the second MASCAC runner across the finish line in leading the Massachusetts Maritime men's cross country team to a solid eighth place team finish at the Westfield State James Earley Invitational last Saturday.  Ingersoll covered the 8K layout in a time of 27:21.18 to finish 16th individually for the Buccaneers, while freshman Jonathan Quigley (Braintree, Mass.) was next in 36th place with a time of 28:08.97 for Head Coach Chris Ryan's squad, which placed third among MASCAC competitors.  On the women's side, seniors Patricia Malagrino (Barrington, R.I.) and Emily Rizzo (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished 55th and 57th, respectively, to lead Head Coach Linda Letourneau's Bucs to a 13th place team finish on the day, as Malagrino covered the 5K layout in a time of 22:17.84 and Rizzo posted a time of 22:25.22. Both Buccaneer squads will be idle until Saturday, October 25th when Massachusetts Maritime returns to Westfield, Mass. for the 2008 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Westfield State.
