Massachusetts Maritime closed out the 2008 campaign on Saturday, November 8th with a 34-7 setback to rival Bridgewater State in the 30th Annual Ocean Spray Cranberry Bowl at Swenson Field in Bridgewater, Mass.  Freshman quarterback Nick Montalto's (South Yarmouth, Mass.) one yard plunge in the second quarter enabled Head Coach Jeremy Cameron's squad to close to within a touchdown at the break, but the host Bears added three third quarter scores to ice their triumph.  Junior Jim Erlwein (Livingston Manor, N.Y.) capped his solid campaign on the defensive side with 12 solo tackles for Massachusetts Maritime, which is set to return 69 letterwinners for the 2009 season.

Matt McDonnell 

Two members of the Massachusetts Maritime men's soccer team were named to the 2008 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) all-conference team for their efforts during this past season.  Junior back Matt McDonnell (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Mike McCarthy (Norwell, Mass.) each earned spots on the second team all-MASCAC squad in a vote of the league's eight coaches. McDonnell appeared in 17 matches for Head Coach Greg Perry's Buccaneers this fall (including 16 starts) and anchored a defensive unit that held opponents to one or fewer goals on seven occasions, while McCarthy also played in all but one contest during his rookie season, registering two assists along the way.  Massachusetts Maritime more than doubled its win total of last season with five triumphs and a pair of ties in 2008, as the 10 of the Bucs' 18 matches were decided by one goal.

Massachusetts Maritime closed out the 2008 campaign on last Saturday morning by placing 26th of 49 teams competing at the 2008 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships hosted by Williams College at Mount Greylock High School in Williamstown, Mass.  Senior Kyle Ingersoll (Wakefield, Mass.) closed out his stellar career by placing 138th individually for Head Coach Chris Ryan's Buccaneers, covering the 8K layout in a time of 29:08, while sophomores Paul Matz (Plainville, Mass.) and Patrick Dannaher (Arlington, Va.) were next in 160th and 167th place, respectively, with times of 29:33.7 and 29:40.8. Junior Matthew Sturgis (Cummaquid, Mass.) and freshman Jonathan Quigley (Braintree, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for Massachusetts Maritime by finishing 183rd and 196th, respectively, with times of 30:00.8 and 30:19.4.  The Buccaneers placed fourth among MASCAC entrants in the competition, as host Williams took the regional title, with fellow NESCAC foes Amherst and Trinity next in second and third places, respectively.  Massachusetts Maritime finished fourth at both the MASCAC and New England Alliance Championships under Ryan this fall.

Kaitlin O'Donnell

Massachusetts Maritime junior women's cross country and softball standout Kaitlin O'Donnell has been appointed to a three-year term on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will begin serving on the prestigious board effective immediately.  A native of Damascus, Md. and a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Cross, O'Donnell will represent both the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) and The Commonwealth Coast Conference on the NCAA Division III National SAAC, as she is scheduled to attend her first meeting later this week at the NCAA's national headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.  O'Donnell, who is majoring in Marine Engineering at Massachusetts Maritime, is a three-year letterwinner in cross country for Head Coach Linda Letourneau and helped lead the Buccaneers to a sixth place team finish at this year's MASCAC Championships. O'Donnell has also been a two-year letterwinner for Head Coach Christine McCarey's softball squad as an outfielder, and she will be working with the NCAA Division III SAAC on legislative issues that are currently affecting the division's membership, and she will also participate in the MASCAC SAAC's community service with the Unified Sports Program. MASCAC student-athletes will also be working with the Unified Sports Program and will sponsor a Field Day for area youth at Westfield State College later this year.  O'Donnell, who is also a leader in Massachusetts Maritime's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, will also assist in a venture with the Unified Sports Program on campus next spring, as the Academy SAAC will sponsor a "Buccaneer Day" for youth at area schools that will feature several activities.

Massachusetts Maritime dropped a 2241-2135 MAC decision to MIT last Saturday afternoon at the MMA Rifle Range at Alumni Gymnasium, as junior Kevin Geisel (Gloucester, Mass.) paced Head Coach Oliver Deibert's Buccaneers with a combined score of 1,093 points in smallbore and air.  Sophomore Michael Surette (Lynn, Mass.) was next with a combined score of 1,066 points for the hosts, while senior Junita Goldman (Oakdale, Conn.) was third with a combined score of 1,057 points.  Massachusetts Maritime will close out the 2008 campaign on Saturday, December 6th by heading to Cambridge, Mass. to compete against both VMI and host MIT.
