THROGGS NECK, N.Y.-- Freshman James Spanopolous (Franklin Square, N.Y.) rushed for 142 yards and one touchdown as New York Maritime gained 323 yards on the ground en route to a 24-14 come-from-behind victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the second annual "Chowder Bowl" non-league college football contest played Thursday evening at Rheinhart Field.

The host Privateers (1-0) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the season opener for both squads when freshman David Kittinger (Fort Myers, Fla.) booted a 32-yard field goal, but the visiting Buccaneers (0-1) grabbed a 7-3 cushion just 47 seconds into the second stanza on junior Brandon Payne's (Marion, Mass.) one-yard plunge in taking that four point lead at the break. Spanopoulos gave New York Maritime a 9-7 edge on the first possession of the second half with a 13-yard scamper, but Payne answered with a 13-yard scoring run of his own with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter to give Massachusetts Maritime a 14-9 lead. Sophomore Robert Nichols (Ossining, N.Y.) gave the hosts' the lead for good on the ensuing possession, capping a six-play drive with a 21-yard touchdown run that was followed by Spanopolous' two-point conversion, and the Privateers iced their triumph with 2:41 remaining in the contest on a 17-yard scoring run by senior Greg Campisi (Lynbrook, N.Y.).

Spanopolous and Nichols combined for 242 of New York Maritime's 323 rushing yards on the night, as the Privateers gained all but six of their 329 yards of total offense on the ground. Sophomore Douglas Dyke (Plainville, Mass.) rushed for 110 yards in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as he and Payne combined for all 140 yards on the ground for the Buccaneers. Senior Joe DeFrank (Morgantown, Pa.) completed six passes for 84 yards on the evening for the visitors, hooking up with fellow senior James McFarland (Ocean Bluff, Mass.) four times for 67 yards.

Junior Nick Stralka (North Kingstown, R.I.) led the defensive charge for Massachusetts Maritime with 18 total tackles, including nine solo stops, while Payne shined on both sides of the ball for the Buccaneers, adding 16 total tackles (eight solo) to go with his two touchdowns. Junior Jim Erlwein (Livingston Manor, N.Y.) was also in double figures in tackles for the visitors with 12 total stops on the night.

Sophomore John Rivera (Monroe, N.Y.) paced New York Maritime with seven total tackles, including four solo stops, while junior Michael Oehl (Nesconset, N.Y.) and freshman Stephen Kircher (Manasquan, N.J.) also chipped in with seven tackles, including three solo stops each. The Privateers claimed the "Chowder Bowl" for the second straight season, as New York Maritime took a 10-6 decision in the first-ever meeting between the two schools last August in Buzzards Bay.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Cambridge, Mass. next Saturday afternoon (September 13th) for a non-league match-up with MIT that kicks off at 2:00 p.m., while New York Maritime travels to Newport, R.I. next Saturday afternoon to square off with Salve Regina in a non-league contest that begins at 1:00 p.m.
