BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Senior Marlon Thornton (Bloomfield, Conn.) rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns to lift Fitchburg State to a 42-31 New England Football Conference Bogan Division victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.
Thornton accounted for all but 36 of the visiting Falcons' (4-4, 4-1 NEFC Bogan) 239 rushing yards on the day in the wild affair that saw the two teams combine for 73 points and 837 yards of total offense, as his three yard run opened the scoring midway through the first quarter before freshman quarterback Nick Montalto's (South Yarmouth, Mass.) four-yard scamper on the ensuing possession enabled the host Buccaneers (0-8, 0-5 NEFC Bogan) to close to within one. Senior quarterback Jim Miller (Wainscott, N.Y.) accounted for the next two Fitchburg State touchdowns, including a seven-yard hookup with sophomore Kenneth Russell (Bedford, Mass.) and a one-yard plunge that sandwiched a career-long 39-yard field goal by Massachusetts Maritime sophomore Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.) for a 21-9 Falcon advantage at the break.
Thornton's second scoring run of the day of three yards extended Fitchburg State's lead to 28-9 heading into the final 15 minutes of play, but the Buccaneers closed back to within five points (28-23) on an eight yard touchdown run by freshman Matt White (Westwood, Mass.) and a four-yard plunge by junior Alex Butler (Bourne, Mass.) in less than four minutes. Miller extended the visitors' advantage to 35-23 on the ensuing possession when he connected with sophomore Carlos De La Rosa (Holyoke, Mass.) for an 11-yard scoring strike, and Thornton capped the Falcon scoring with a two-yard run that came with just under four minutes remaining. Butler added the final score of the afternoon for the Buccaneers with a two-yard touchdown that was followed by a two-point conversion rush by senior Joe DeFrank (Morgantown, Pa.), but Fitchburg State recovered the ensuing onside kickoff and ran out the clock for its triumph.
Miller completed 19-of-31 passes for 225 yards to go with his two aerial touchdowns, as Russell hauled in five receptions for 112 yards in the win for Fitchburg State. Butler rushed for a career-high 124 yards to go with his two touchdowns in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which rushed for 331 yards on the afternoon, the fifth highest single-game total in school history. Montalto and White combined for 137 yards on the ground to go with their scores, as Butler amassed 215 all-purpose yards for the day, including 85 on kick off returns. The Falcons outgained the Buccaneers by a 464-373 margin, as the two teams combined for 50 first downs and 140 offensive plays.
Senior Dan Underwood (Bellflower, Calif.) led Fitchburg State defensively with 13 total tackles, including 11 solo stops, while junior Jim Erlwein (Livingston Manor, N.Y.) added 13 total tackles as well for Massachusetts Maritime, including eight solo stops. Freshman Walter Butler (Bourne, Mass.) collected eight solo tackles for the Buccaneers, while the Bridgewater, Mass. junior duo of Chris Paze and Mike Dangoia recorded a fumble recovery and interception, respectively, for the hosts.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Framingham State in a NEFC Bogan Division match-up next Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State hosts Westfield State in a NEFC Bogan Division outing next Saturday afternoon in Fitchburg, Mass. that kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
