College Fanz Sports Network to Broadcast 2010 Cranberry Bowl Live
First Game Selected for 2010 Season Features Massachusetts Maritime and Bridgewater State in 32nd Annual Gridiron Meeting
Grand Island, Nebraska - November 5, 2009 - College Fanz Sports Network, the world's largest online college sports community launched by ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen, today announced that the 2010 Cranberry Bowl, the annual football meeting between Massachusetts Maritime and Bridgewater State, will be broadcast live on http://www.CollegeFanz.com.
"This is the first game in the 2010 football season to be scheduled for College Fanz Game Day," said Rasmussen, then founding partner and CEO of College Fanz. "When we began broadcasting live football games and other programming earlier this fall, Massachusetts Maritime approached us about the Cranberry Bowl. It's a historic regional rivalry that we are proud to broadcast on College Fanz."
Both Massachusetts Maritime and Bridgewater State compete in NCAA Division III. The two schools are separated by 28 miles on a road that is named "The Cranberry Highway" that stretches between Buzzards Bay and Bridgewater, as there are countless cranberry bogs in the area. This year's game will be the 31st Cranberry Bowl played, as Bridgewater's Bears hold a 22-7-1 lead over the Buccaneers in the Cranberry Bowl series, having won the last 12 since 1997.
"Massachusetts Maritime is extremely excited about having the College Fanz Game Day experience coming to Buzzards Bay for the 32nd Annual Cranberry Bowl Presented by Ocean Spray," said Jim Seavey, Director of Sports Information & Compliance at Massachusetts Maritime. "College Fanz has created so many memorable experiences for student-athletes and fans of small college institutions throughout the country in such a very short time, and we are honored that they will play a large role in making next year's Cranberry Bowl another memorable experience."
The Cranberry Bowl was first played in 1979, and was the creation of then-Bridgewater State Head Coach Peter Mazzaferro, who suggested that the two rivals play for a traveling trophy each year. Mazzaferro approached the Edaville Railroad, which operates in nearby Carver, about providing a sponsored trophy for the event, and Edaville Railroad donated the first Cranberry Scoop that goes to the winner of the game.
Over the past five years, Ocean Spray of Middleboro has been the generous sponsor/presenter of the game, as they have donated a new Scoop as well as countless resources to promote the game with t-shirts, a pre-game luncheon on the prior Thursday, as well as product samples and other items that are distributed during the contest. Ocean Spray also provided funds to produce a commemorative program for the 30th year anniversary of the first game.
College Fanz features video stream broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week with programming that currently includes "The College Fanz Report" and the "College Fanz NAIA Football Game of the Week," as well as highlights and features covering a wide-range of college sports, student-athletes, coaches, rivalries, mascots, marching bands, fanz, and alumni. All College Fanz broadcasts are available at http://www.CollegeFanz.com.
