Hafferty Named To CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Football Academic All-District Team

Buzzards Bay, Mass. -- Massachusetts Maritime senior offensive lineman William Hafferty is one of 25 student-athletes who were named late last week to the 2009 College Sports Information Directors of America Football Academic All-District team presented by ESPN The Magazine. Hafferty is now eligible for selection to the prestigious CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine National Academic All-America team that will be announced later this month.
A native of Sandwich, Mass. and a graduate of Sandwich High School, Hafferty was part of a Buccaneer offensive line that was consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally in Division III this season in rushing, as Massachusetts Maritime finished the year with 244 rushing yards per game in 2009, including a school-record 545 rushing yards in a 49-27 victory over MIT back on September 13th.
A Marine Engineering major at the Academy, Hafferty has posted a 3.59 cumulative grade point average during his matriculation, as the three-year starter is a two-time Academic All-New England Football Conference and Academic All-Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference selection. William, who was also named to the Academy's Athletic Director's Honor Roll during the 2008-09 academic year, served as a Student Trustee on Massachusetts Maritime's Board of Trustees as well last year.
Hafferty is looking to become the second Academic All-America honoree in Massachusetts Maritime history, as Buccaneer baseball Hall of Famer John Hendy earned the accolade as a third team national selection in 1982.
Hafferty is one of nine student-athletes representing the New England Football Conference on the 2009 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad.
