Sherr Receives Division II-III Gold Helmet Award From New England Football Writers And Gridiron Club Of Greater Boston
Watch Nathan Sherr receive this week's Division II-III Gold Helmet Award!
Buzzards Bay, Mass. -- Massachusetts Maritime Academy sophomore running back Nathan Sherr is the recipient of this week's Division II-III Gold Helmet Award presented by the New England Football Writers and the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Sherr will receive the prestigious honor at the weekly New England Football Writers Luncheon that will be held on Wednesday afternoon at Harvard University's Dillon Field House in Cambridge, Mass.
A native of Lynnfield, Mass. and a graduate of Austin Prep High School, Sherr rushed for a school-record 325 yards on 26 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 1, 3 and 95 yards in Massachusetts Maritime's 49-27 victory over MIT last Sunday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium, as his last score matched the second longest scoring run in school history. Sherr, who transferred to Massachusetts Maritime from UConn, becomes the fourth Buccaneer to earn a Gold Helmet, joining Jim O'Neill (1980), Kevin Piecewicz (1992 and 1993) and David Burrill (2000), who held the previous school single-game rushing mark of 315 yards set on September 15, 2001 against Maine Maritime.
Sherr, who rushed for 190 yards and a touchdown run of 66 yards in Massachusetts Maritime's season opening setback to New York Maritime on September 3rd, is the national leader in NCAA Division III in both rushing (257.5 yards per game) and all-purpose yardage (260.5 yards per game) through two weeks of play.
In addition to his Gold Helmet Award, Sherr was also named on Sunday evening as the New England Football Conference's Offensive Player of the Week and was tabbed on Tuesday afternoon as the ECAC Division III Northeast Offensive Player of the Week.
Massachusetts Maritime, which stands at 1-1 overall on the young season, seeks its second straight victory on Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers travel to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott in their final non-conference contest of the regular season that kicks off at Noon EDT.
