Buccaneers Wrap Up Spring Season

Buccaneers Wrap Up Spring Season

The numbers don't accurately reflect the intensity with which the MMA men's lacrosse team played this season. Finishing the year with a record of 4-8 overall, the Buccaneers were in every game they played, battling into the fourth quarter to the final whistle.

The team opened the season with a 9-6 loss to Plymouth State College, before earning their first win on March 20 at home in a 10-7 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology. While the Plymouth State game reunited former high school treammates Justin Dube (Bourne, MA) and Ryan Linn (Bourne, MA), the Wentworth game featured a face-off between brothers from Sandwich as MMA freshman Mike Lambros took the field against senior Nick Lambros of the Leopards.

U-Mass Dartmouth arrive at Ellis Field on Taylor's Point March 26 and caught the Buccaneers shorthanded. Without their top scoring tandem of Brian and Connor Burke available, the Corsairs delat MMA a 5-4 defeat. In the game, after a friendly pre-game handshake former high school temmates Mike Lambros of the Bucs and Paul Hanna (Sandwich, MA) played against each other.

In their next three games the Buccaneers took the the road. Still without the services of the Burke brothers, the Bucs lost 14-8 on March 29 to Babson College. Returning the full strength on April 2, MMA traveled to Roger Williams College, where they were edged by the Hawks in a 1-goal 9-8 late game victory.

The road trip continued on April 5, this time with the Bucs claiming a 7-5 win over M.I.T.  returning home on April 8, the Bucs made it back-to-back wins with a 9-7 win over Salem State College.

Division III powerhouse Springfield College paid a visit on April 12 and returned home with a hard earned 12-8 victory. Wheaton College was next up on the 16th dealing the Bucs an 8-5 defeat. Lasell caught the Bucs trying to recover after losses to Springfield and Wheaton and for only the second time MMA suffered a loss by more than four goals.

The Buccaneers were right back in the win column April 22 at Clark University bringing home a 10-9 win. The season ended April 24 at home as U-Mass Boston slipped past MMA 10-6.

One of the bright-lights for the men this spring was the play of sophomore goalie James Hitchings. Getting the bulk of the starts in net for the Bucs, Hitchings continued to keep the team in games week after week with tremendous play. Adding to the play up front of the Burke brothers was the trio of senior captain Matt Sullivan (13 G 2 A), junior attackman John Herman (7 G 4 A) and sophomore midfielder Ed Klodarska (10 G 5 A).

The Bucs finished Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference play  with a record of 2-4.
