BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Freshman Matt Figueiredo (Wilmington, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as Salem State netted three second half markers en route to a 3-1 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference opener for both squads Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.

The visiting Vikings (6-0, 1-0 MASCAC) evened matters in the 55th minute of play when senior Pedriac Boscoe (Dartmouth, Mass.) converted a penalty kick after the host Buccaneers (2-5, 0-1 MASCAC) had taken a 1-0 halftime advantage when sophomore Matt Patten (Weymouth, Mass.) converted a feed from fellow sophomore Andrew Mullen (Bridgewater, Mass.) in the 35th minute. Figueiredo then gave Salem State the lead for good in the 64th minute when he converted a pass from junior Andrew Angus (Dorchester, Mass.), and that duo clicked again with 3:09 to enable the Vikings to remain unbeaten.

Senior Pawel Brzyczy (Krakow, Poland) picked up the win in goal for Salem State with a six-save effort, while freshman Corey Cameron (Westfield, Mass.) made eight stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Vikings outshot the Buccaneers by a 13-10 margin for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Boston on Wednesday evening for a non-league match with Emerson that begins at 7:15 p.m., while Salem State will venture to Boston on Tuesday afternoon for a non-league outing with UMass Boston at 3:30 p.m.
