LEXINGTON, Va. -- Massachusetts Maritime captured the varsity smallbore team title in the Marksman Division of the 2009 MAC Rifle Championships Saturday afternoon on the campus of the Virginia Military Institute.

The Buccaneers posted a team score of 1,965 points to edge runner-up Indiana (Pa.)'s total of 1,915 points, as sophomore Michael Surette (Lynn, Mass.) led the way with an individual score of 531 points. Junior Kevin Geisel (Gloucester, Mass.) was next with a score of 520 points, while senior Junita Goldman (Oakdale, Conn.) followed with 480 points. Freshman Ethan Lowe (Wareham, Mass.) rounded out the Massachusetts Maritime contingent with a score of 434 points for the competition.

Surette and Geisel finished 19th and 23rd, respectively, in the final smallbore individual standings, while Goldman placed 32nd in the competition. Freshman Justin O'Donnell (North Attleboro, Mass.) posted a score of 458 points in the individual air rifle competition for the Bucs.
