Bucs Sail Sixth in Kennedy Cup

MMA sailed to a sixth place finish over the weekend at the Naval Academy in the Kennedy Cup. The Bucs sailed Friday in blustery 20 knot northerlies which tested the boat handling and tactical expertise of the cadets. A poor start in race one was overcome by good boat speed and sail handling giving the cadets second place after day one behind Navy and just ahead of California Maritime.

Saturday's weather proved to be more of the same with MMA finishing in the top three on three occasions, leaving them in a tie for fifth place just two points out of third and hopeful for a top three finish.

Sunday's winds were light and variable. The Bucs gave their best but had poor results in the light conditions finishing out of contention in sixth place. The Kennedy Cup was donated to the Naval Academy by the Kennedy family in 1962 in Memory of President John F. Kennedy. MMA last won the Cup in 2001. The Bucs sailed second in 2002.

Andrew Zavatsky, Mike Moriarty, Stephen Napoli and Leon Hadley will move on with graduation in the spring. Returning to the water next season will be Francis Hennigan, Ian Fraser, Patrick Ryan, PJ Johnson and Christopher Morrow.
