Volleyball Looks To Continue Growth, Success In Lorance's Second Season As 2009 Campaign Begins This Weekend
The Massachusetts Maritime volleyball program continues to grow under the guidance of second year Head Coach Ashley Lorance, as the Buccaneers re-took the court in 2008 after a one-year hiatus and admirably restored the program. Lorance is looking to build upon that growth as her squad welcomes back four letterwinners and six newcomers for another foray into MASCAC action this fall.
Juniors Victoria Presutti (Marshfield, Mass./Archbishop Williams) and Christine Egbert (Meadowbrook, Pa./Abington) will serve as co-captains for the Bucs once again this season, as Lorance describes the duo as "two individuals I can count on to set the example for our entire team. They are helping to shape the positive direction of this program."
Presutti appeared in all 17 matches for Massachusetts Maritime last fall, recording a team-high 33 kills along the way, while Egbert returns to action after missing most of last season with an injury. Fellow junior Allison Condino (Fitchburg, Mass./Westlake) and sophomore Samantha Foley (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) are the two returning letterwinners for the Buccaneers, as Condino led the squad with 56 set assists and Foley ranked second in kills with 24.
Six freshmen complete the 2009 Buccaneer roster and will add depth to this year's squad, as freshman Alexa Prendergast (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) joins Egbert at outside hitter while fellow rookies Suzanne Marino (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) join Foley at middle hitter. Freshmen Joanne Robery (Plainville, Mass./King Philip) and Leanne Talbot (Norton, Mass./Southeastern Regional) will be vying with Condino at setter, while fellow freshman Laura Basile (Cambridge, Mass./Mount Saint Joseph) looks to contribute as a libero.
Massachusetts Maritime will play a 26-match regular season schedule this fall, as the 2009 campaign begins on Friday, September 4th when the Buccaneers travel to Waterville, Maine to participate in the two-day Thomas Invitational. Lorance's crew opens its home slate on Thursday, September 10th by hosting Suffolk in a non-league outing at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
