Softball Splits Conference Series with Vikings

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Bucs softball hosted Salem State in conference play on Saturday afternoon and earned a split of the MASCAC doubleheader with a 6-1 loss in game one and an 8-6 win in game two.

 

Game One

The Basics

  • Taylor McDermott had three hits in the win. Allison Frost, Dawn Eisnor, and Emily Henning had two hits. Alaina Giuliano and Gianna Fowler had one hit.
  • McDermott drove in three runs, and Giuliano, Eisnor, and Isabella Perrotti drove in one.
  • Frost and Henning scored twice, Giuliano and Isabelle Besser scored once.
  • Henning had two doubles, and McDermott had one.
  • Frost recorded two stolen bases in the win.

 

How It Happened

Salem scored first in the top of the first inning on a McDermott single to bring in Frost to make it 1-0 Salem.

It took until the bottom of the third, but the Buccaneers tied the game on a Patane ground out that brought in Ward from third to bring the score to 1-1.

In the fifth, Perrotti grounded out to second, and Henning came in from third to give Salem a 2-1 lead through five.

Eisnor knocked in the Vikings third run of the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to right, bringing in Besser. Salem led 3-1 after six.

In the top of the seventh, Salem put the game away, scoring three times. Giuliano drove in the first run, and McDermott doubled later in the inning to bring in two more. Salem took game one, 6-1.

  • Samantha Gaona-Sullivan and Gianna Fowler had two hits. Allison Frost, Taylor McDermott, Dawn Eisnor, and Abigail Richardson had one.
  • Fowler drove in five runs in the loss, and McDermott knocked in one.
  • Gaona-Sullivan scored twice, and Alaina Giuliano, McDermott, Isabelle Besser, and Fowler scored once.

How It Happened

Salem took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a McDermott single to score Gaone-Sullivan, and Fowler singled through the left side of the infield to bring in McDermott. In the bottom of the first, Burton hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Kerecz and cut the deficit to one run, 2-1, after one inning.

After a scoreless second, the Bucs tied the game in the third on a Burton single that brought in Kerecz to score, and the game was tied, 2-2, after three.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ward scored on a wild pitch, and Kerecz hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Whitman. Maritime led by two runs, 4-2, at the end of the fourth.

Maritime extended their lead to six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Burton reached on a fielder's choice, and Whitman and Warren came in to score on a Viking error. Shortly after, Patane hit a two-run home run to score herself and Burton, and the Buccaneers led 8-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Vikings gave the Bucs a scare with a grand slam from Fowler. Up two runs, 8-6, Catlett and the Maritime defense closed the door to earn the 8-6 win and split the conference doubleheader.

The Buccaneers host Bridgewater State in a conference doubleheader on Monday, April 21st, beginning at 12 pm.
