Bucs Split With Pride in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Maritime softball hosted Regis College for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at home. After losing game one, 11-4, the Buccaneers bounced back in game two to winning 5-2.

  • Bianca Burke and Madigan Lawler recorded three hits in the win. Chloe Beland, Lynsey Kay, Gabriella Blanchard, and Sydney Grund had two hits. Rees, Lexi Nichols, and Grace Motto had one hit.
  • Motto drove in three runs, Blanchard and Lawler knocked in two. Beland, Kay, Rees, and Nichols drove in one.
  • Burke, Kay, Nichols, and Blanchard scored twice. Beland, Michaela Edwards, and Madi Zancan scored once.

How It Happened

Regis jumped out to a big lead in the top of the first inning with five runs before the Buccaneers had a chance to defend themselves. The Pride held a 5-0 lead through the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Maritime cut the deficit to two runs with three runs of their own. Klemp hit a sacrifice fly to right, Ward singled in Butler, and Gale scored on a throwing error on a double steal. 

Booker made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning. The Bucs trailed 5-4 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Pride struck again, putting up six runs in the inning. 

Ross came in to pitch for the Bucs and shut the Pride down the rest of the way, but the Buccaneers bats couldn't get rolling. Maritime dropped game one, 11-4.

  • Ab'c'de Patane had two hits in the win. Reagan KereczHannah Burton, and Sarah Holler had one base knock.

  • Patane hit a home run, the only extra-base hit for the Bucs.

How It Happened

Maritime struck first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the first. Holler singled in Burton, and Patane knocked in Holler to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead after one inning.

After a scoreless second, the Buccaneers scored three times in the bottom of the third. Burton came in to score on a wild pitch, Holler grounded out, bringing in Booker, and Patane hit a solo home run to left center field to give Maritime a commanding 5-0 advantage.

Regis finally put runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a Beland double that scored Motto after her triple, and Kay grounded out to bring in Burke from third. The Bucs led by three, 5-2, after six.

In the top of the seventh, Catlett cruised through three hitters, getting two ground outs and striking out the third hitter of the inning to end the game, earning the 5-2 win in game two and a split of the doubleheader with Regis.

 

What's Next

Maritime hosts Framingham State in conference play on Sunday, April 27th, beginning at 12pm.
