Maritime Unable to hold off rise of the Phoenix

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Buccaneers softball team finished their southern trip with a game against the Wilson College Phoenix. In the first-ever meeting between the squads, the Phoenix got the upper hand, winning the game 9-1.

  • Katelyn Keller led all players in the game with four hits. Kayla Talbert and Madison Briggs had two hits each. Five other Phoenix hitters recorded a hit.
  • Keller notched two triples in the game, and Sydney Hartle had one. Kiera O'Brine and Talbert each had a double.
  • Talbert drove in four runs, Hartle drove in two, Briggs and Jenna Weaver drove in one each. 
  • Keller stole two bases, and Emily Randalls stole one.
  • Keller scored three times while Talbert scored twice. Four other Wilson base runners came in to score in the win.

 

How It Happened

Wilson jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Then, in the bottom of the second, the Buccaneers got one run back, their only run of the game, when Gale singled on the infield, and Lemons came in to score.

Up 6-1 after two, the Phoenix held their five-run lead into the fifth and extended it with two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to take the game, 9-1.
