Bucs Drop a Pair in Home Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Buccaneer softball played its home opening games on Friday against Gordon College. Though the Bucs recorded 26 hits across the two games, they left a slew of runners on base and ended up losing both games, 6-4 and 12-7.

Maritime

  • Kelsey BookerAbbey Doherty, and Lexi Leblanc all had two-hit games in the loss. Ab'c'de PataneMikale LemonsNatalie Gale, and Camryn Whitman all had one hit.
  • Booker hit her first home run of the season in the game. Doherty had a triple and a double, and Lemons recorded a double.
  • Lemons knocked in two runs, and Booker and LeBlanc drove in one apiece.
  • Doherty scored twice, and Booker and Lemons scored once.

Gordon

  • Isabella Rivera had three hits in the win. Emilie Adelmann and Emily Graham each had two hits. Four other Scots added one hit.
  • Rivera hit a home run in the win. Graham recorded a triple, and Rivera and Samantha Perkins each had a double.
  • Graham drove in two runs to lead the team. Rivera, Peyton Heitzman, and Perkins all drove in one run.
  • Six different players scored the team's six runs.
  • Emily Hutchins had the lone stolen base in the game.

 

How It Happened

Maritime took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by Booker. It was her first home run of the season, 16th of her career, putting her one ahead of Patane for the all-time program lead.

The Bucs held the lead until the top of the fourth inning, when the Fighting Scots got themselves on the board and took their first lead. Graham tripled to drive in pinch runner McKayla Kelly, followed by a Heitzman groundout that allowed Graham to come in and make the score 2-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Lemons hit an RBI double to center field, driving in Doherty. Right after Lemons, LeBlanc singled in Lemons to give the Buccaneers a 3-2 lead through four.

After a scoreless fifth, Gordon scored two in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Buccaneers got the tying run back in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 4-4.

Gordon went on to score two runs in the top of the seventh and retake the lead, this time for good. The Buccaneers were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, losing game one 6-4.

  • Avie Hernandez had three base hits in the win. Makayla Falco, Emily Hutchins, Emilie Adelmann, and Samantha Perkins all had two hits. Emily Graham and Peyton Heitzman each had one hit.
  • Hutchins and Graham both had a double in the game.
  • Hernandez drove in four runs. Hutchins and Perkins knocked in two, and Falco, Adelmann, and Graham all had one RBI.
  • Perkins scored three times, and Hutchins and Heitsman scored twice. Five other players scored once.
  • Hutchins had the only stolen base of the game for the Scots.

 

How It Happened

Gordon led game two wire-to-wire and scored early in the top of the first. Hutchins singled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Fighting Scots up 2-0. Maritime got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a Patane single that scored Burton. The Bucs trailed, 2-1, after one inning.

In the second, Hernandez singled to score Perkins for Gordon, and they extended the lead back to two runs, 3-1.

Whitman got the Bucs back within one again in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single that scored Lemons. It was 3-2 after four.

In the top of the fifth, Perkins knocked in two runs, and Hernandez did the same, scoring four runs in the inning to go up by five, 7-2. The Bucs weren't going to go away that easily, though. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back within two runs, 7-5. Booker singled in Burton, Patane singled in Durham, who had pinch run for Booker, and Doherty doubled, allowing Patane to score. 

In the top of the sixth, Graham doubled, bringing in pinch runner Morgan Barrett, and the Fighting Scots led by three runs, 8-5. Kerecz stole home in the bottom of the sixth as part of a double steal with Burton to make the score 8-6. 

In the top of the seventh, Gordon scored four times to go up by six, their biggest lead of the game, 12-6. Maritime got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Unable to muster any more runs, they lost game two of the doubleheader, 12-7.

The Buccaneers host Bay Path tomorrow, Saturday, March 21st, at 2 and 4pm.
